The new pre-law packet, info about CU Global Brigades
BARNARD PRE-LAW PACKET!
The Barnard pre-law deans have created a pre-law packet and advising guide that is available to download at www.barnard.edu/dos/after-barnard/pre-law/. Students and alumnae who are planning to apply to law schools during the 2011-2012 academic year should read over the material therein.
GLOBAL BRIGADES: LAW BRIGADE CHAPTER!
Additionally, this year, Columbia University Global Brigades is starting a Law Brigade chapter. The Law Brigade may be of particular interest to and an exciting opportunity for students associated APLS.
Global Brigades is a volunteer student-based collaborative dedicated to the research, design, and construction of socially responsible, environmentally sustainable solutions to problems in the developing
world.
Law Brigades, a division of Global Brigades, provides pro-bono legal services to remote communities in developing countries to foster human rights, support sustainable development and implement legal empowerment strategies. Columbia Brigaders will be working in Panama alongside Panamanian lawyers on projects that work to alleviate
poverty, foster human rights, and promote community development.
Domestic and international legal issues such as international humanitarian law, migration and refugee issues, business licensing, organic and fair trade certification procedures, mirco-enterprise laws, and environmental and human rights concerns will be tackled.
All members of the Columbia community– undergraduates and graduates–are invited to attend!
For more information, check out http://globalbrigades.org/, and come to the information session on Tuesday, April 5 from 9-10 PM in West Lerner Lounge (Facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=112827345463618).

Arthur Liman Public Interest Summer Fellowship
The Arthur Liman Public Interest Program at Yale Law School supports
undergraduate and graduate students working in the public interest.
Broadly defined, public interest law includes helping those lacking
resources to retain attorneys, as well as engaging in advocacy work and
participating in shaping public policy. The Liman Summer Fellowship
offers students an opportunity to participate in public interest law
projects. Past fellows have worked on issues relating to immigrants’
rights, workers’ rights, prison conditions, educational adequacy,
reproductive rights, and juvenile rights.
All currently enrolled students are eligible to apply, including seniors
who wish to work during the summer immediately following their graduation.
Three fellows will be selected by a Barnard committee. The Liman fellows
will receive a stipend of $2,500 and subsidized on-campus housing (if the
summer internship is in New York). Selected fellows will be required to
attend the Liman Colloquium with fellows from the other participating
schools on March 3-4, 2011 at Yale Law School. They must also complete a
final report describing their summer fellowship to be submitted by
September 1, 2011.
At the time of application, students need not have identified a specific
project. The Liman Program and Barnard’s Office of Career Development
will help with finding appropriate summer internships. However, if
students are interested in specific substantive areas or projects, they
should describe them in their applications.
The application must include the following:
–A cover sheet listing your current contact information (address, phone,
email) and class.
–A resume, which should list relevant prior experiences working or
volunteering in public service.
–An essay not to exceed 5 double-spaced pages describing why you are
motivated to work in public interest law. The essay should do more than
recite activities from the applicant’s resume. If the applicant is
considering a fellowship at a specific host organization, a short
statement about the host’s work and confirmation that it is a non-profit
organization.
–At least two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a
faculty member who knows the applicant’s work well. The recommendations
must be included with the application.
–A copy of the applicant’s unofficial current college transcript.
Applications for Summer 2011 fellowships must be submitted by January 28,
2011. All parts of the application must be received by close of business
and must be delivered to the Office of the Dean of Studies, 105 Milbank
Hall.
If you have any questions about the program, you should visit
the website, http://www.law.yale.edu/intellectuallife/undergraduatesummerfellowship.htm
or email Dean Kuan Tsu at ckuantsu@barnard.edu.
The Root-Tilden-Kern (RTK) Scholarship Program
The RTK is a scholarship program for law students who are committed to pursuing public interest work after graduation. Each year, the program selects 20 Scholars on the basis of commitment to public service work, leadership potential, and academic excellence. In return for a ten-year commitment to public service, Scholars receive full tuition for all three years of law school, as well as orientation, mentoring, and networking opportunities.
The RTK has a broad definition of public interest work. Our graduates have gone on to a range of careers, including civil rights, community development, criminal justice, government and politics (at the federal, state, and local levels), international human rights, direct legal services, public policy, and social entrepreneurship.
The RTK program also has a strong commitment to diversity in the public interest legal profession. We would very much like to see applications from people of color, LGBTQ people, and individuals from diverse socioeconomic and ideological backgrounds. We are particularly interested in applications from those with backgrounds reflective of the communities they intend to serve.

2011 ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship
From the ABA (American Bar Association):
The 2011-2012 application for the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship is now available. The Scholarship Fund is intended to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to the scholarship recipients.
The Scholarship Fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. Twenty awards will be made to entering first-year students and may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during each student’s time in law school. The application may be downloaded from our website, http://new.abanet.org/centers/diversity/Pages/losf.aspx. Completed scholarship applications must be received no later than March 1, 2011.
Recipients will be selected based on their qualifications for the scholarship and not on the law school they plan to attend. Therefore, law students applying to any and all ABA-accredited law schools may benefit from these scholarships.
The goal of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund is to encourage and enable students who would not otherwise have the financial ability to attend law school. We intend for these scholarship funds to supplement any grants or scholarship funds already awarded to or under consideration for the recipients. The financial aid package offered to a student at a law school will not be affected by the receipt of an ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship.
